Sunday 29th July 2012 – Pentecost 9B (5)

Gracious God,

We thank you for the many ways

in which you respond to our needs,

assuring us of your love and presence

as we lead our ordinary lives.

Your story has been told

and changed and shaped

who we are today

as we seek to live out

what it means to follow You.

You feed our desire to know more about You,

as well as the hunger

that rumbles in our stomachs.

We thank You for the presence of others

who speak and demonstrate Your love

by enfolding us with Your care,

and by reaching out to others.

Today we remember those

who are seeking to understand their emptiness,

as they fill their lives

with all they could want

and yet to not have their needs met.

We think of the many ways

in which people are pulled to dream unrealistic dreams

that set them apart from others.

Help us to draw others to Your hillside,

where they might hear Your story

of sharing life with others

and discovering through the story of Jesus,

that You give more than we could ever need.

We remember those whose emptiness

is physical hunger.

For us,

the basic needs of bread and water

are more than met,

and yet we are more than aware

of others whose basic needs are still not met.

Help us to work towards a fairer world,

where people live aware of those on other continents.

May we remember that the much we have

affects the little of others.

Encourage us to share,

and to be satisfied with having enough.

We remember those who are afraid,

for there is much that can frighten us all

in the world we live in.

We think of those affected by war and uprising,

families torn apart by political unrest,

and people who find themselves without

a safe place to call home.

May the be assured of Your presence

in the action of those who seek to keep the peace.

We think of those whose physical and mental health

has drawn them away from other people.

May they be assured

that You are at work in the caring relationships

that offer healing of body, mind and soul.

We think of those whose days are different

as they miss a loved one

through their moving away

or through their death.

May they find Your presence

assuring them

that You are with them,

calling them into Your embrace of love

with friendships that build strength and courage

for the future.

In the prayers we offer,

may we learn to trust the action of the Holy Spirit

responding to the needs of Your world.

Amen.

Sunday 29th July 2012 – Pentecost 9B (3)

Generous God,

Your love and care for Your creation

is laid out

with the dawn of each new day.

In the stories that are told and shared;

in the adventures that are to be experienced;

as food and drink

fill the emptiness

and quench the thirst,

Your desire to be a present being,

shaping and forming life,

is offered.

In worship and relationships

You lay before us

the human need to live in companionship,

and Your hope

that our lives might be shaped

by the encounters and experiences

we have of meeting new people

and sharing with those we know well.

Alone we may feel empty and in need of reassurance,

but in the midst of the crowd

You feed us with knowledge

of how faith calls us to serve You

in new ways.

You teach us

that standing alone

and being part of the crowd

are both important experiences.

For in the crowd

we are built up

in all we share of knowing Jesus.

While alone

we listen to Your voice

and the hopes You have for us.

But standing alone,

or in the midst of the crowd,

can also call our attention away from You.

Alone,

we can become focussed on our own wants and ambitions,

and become selfish

in the time we want for ourselves.

In the midst of the crowd,

we get caught us

in being like others,

and listening to the voices

that lead us away from You;

we can be afraid to hold our own opinion,

afraid to speak of Your love in difficult situations.

With Your forgiveness

may we hold our solitude and fellowship

in balance.

May we use both to shape our lives\with Your love and hope

that others might

meet You in the shared conversations

and in the silence of their own company

be assured of the Holy Spirit with them.

 Amen

Sunday 22nd July 2012 – Pentecost 8B

Last week of the holidays.   Normal prayer writing should be resumed for Sunday 29th.   In the meantime the last of the prayers to be found on our order of service.

God of welcome,

You watch us revel in the world

and then open wide Your arms for our return.

You blend our stories with Your own

building the picture

of life shared in God’s love.

That love extends from this place

as we reach out in Your name

to the lives of others.

Amen
